The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. HJF is seeking a Scientist I develop and conduct research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics at USUHS. The current project falls under the Combat Casualty Care USUHS priority area of institutional focus. Development of this therapy by understanding the mechanisms in a systems specific way will help us to improve the efficacy of treatment for nerve agent poisoning. The present research program is entitled: "Brief Isoflurane exposure for post-exposure neuroprotection against nerve agents: Proteomic analysis to understand the mechanisms".

Responsibilities

Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
• Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
• Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
• Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
• Performs animal work in the adult rat. Work involves studying the toxic effect of a model nerve agent (paraoxon, an insecticide), neuroprotection by brief isoflurane exposure and collection of brain tissues for proteomic analysis.
• Performs monitoring of seizure in treated animals using Racine scale and intracardial perfusion of animals using formaldehyde to fix the tissues at the end of the study for histopathological /neuropathological analyses.
• Provide laboratory help and support for 1) dissection of the brain areas, 2) neuropathology analysis, microscopy, imaging and image analysis, which will be critical for the proposed studies.
• Provide help with bioinformatic analysis of the proteomic data in collaboration with the senior colleagues and departmental experts.
• Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques; excellent communication skills; ability to troubleshoot technical procedures; ability to work independently and supervise others.
• Experience in working with the paraoxon model in the rat is highly preferred.
• Prior experience in the proposed animal model is highly preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities
• Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

• Doctorate Degree required.
• Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.
